Community Connections
Loudoun County , VA
Population: 86,129
Program Year: 2000
Abstract:
Loudoun County, Virginia, the third fastest-growing county in the country, has many new residents who live in brand new neighborhoods. The dynamic growth includes fast-paced lifestyles, an explosion of community issues, and disconnected families and neighborhoods. Communication between the county and its communities -- and within the communities themselves -- is essential. Community outreach is a key goal of the County government, which is striving to be proactive in community problem-solving, and to help citizens gain ownership in solving community problems.
On National Family Volunteer Day, a "Family Matters" initiative of the Points of Life Foundation, Loudoun County decided to inspire families and neighborhoods by promoting neighborhood gatherings with themes of community improvement. The county provided over twenty residents with Neighborhood Party Kits, and at least seven neighborhoods held their own events to conduct "random acts of caring." Community networking was at its best. Projects included: organizing a Potomac River clean-up, creating a neighborhood website, and raising funds for the Women's Shelter. These innovative community problem-solving efforts involved 150 volunteers assisting at least 250 citizens in need. Neighborhood, community and quality family time have become rare, and when families were willing to combine these, it became a win/win effort for Loudoun County.
