Integrated Preschool Placement Option
York County, VA
Population: 42,422
Program Year: 1997
Abstract:
The York County Division of Children's Services realized that preschool children with severe to profound developmental disabilities needed a summer program to expose them to peer role models without developmental disabilities. Special needs children spend their school year with children with similar conditions. These children are not exposed to children their own age that are not disabled. The York County Division of Children's Services, in collaboration with York County Public Schools, developed and operated a Summer Inclusion Program to provide pre-school services to special needs children. The goal of the program is to provide a natural preschool environment where both disabled and non-disabled children can interact together, play and foster new relationships. The county's Head Start Program and the school system's Student Services Early Childhood Special Education Program work together to provide the six-week program. Operational costs, totaling $7,000, pay for the program staff, supplies and snacks. Transportation is coordinated by the school system.
