NACo encourages elected county officials and county staff to make a New Year's resolution to help the environment and improve their health through NACo's Go Green, Get Healthy Campaign.

AT WORK
Print double-sided and only when needed: Reduce your use of paper 50% or more by changing your printer default settings to print double-sided.
Recycle and eliminate use of plastics: Use a mug for water, coffee, and tea, and drink from the tap.
Save electricity by turning off lights and electronics: Consider leaving reminders to turn off lights on the exits of rooms where people often forget.
Purchase environmentally-preferable office products: from electronics, light bulbs, and briefcases to pens, paper, and desk organizers
Walk, bike , carpool, or take public transportation: save money, reduce commute time, and lower your risk of disease
Pack a healthy lunch: save money, make healthier choices, and limit portion sizes.
Implement a wellness program: reduce absenteeism, and reduce your county’s overall healthcare costs.
Encourage colleagues to green their offices: have friendly competitions

Heat and cool your home efficiently: check your air filter, plant trees, and use a programmable thermostat.
Reduce the amount of mail you receive: Pay your bills electronically and remove your name from junk mail and unwanted catalog lists.
Use water more efficiently: run full loads, turn off the tap, and fix leaky faucets.
Improve indoor air quality: test for harmful pollutants and eliminate tobacco smoke
Save water, avoid pesticides and plant natives in your yard and garden
Recycle and compost yard and food wastes: enrich soils and prevent runoff pollutants.
Buy your food from local growers: food from local growers is fresher and more nutritious
Change the way you prepare and eat food: stock your home with healthier food and snacking options.
Clean your home with homemade or environmentally preferable products
Eliminate energy waste: unplug electronics and use energy efficient lighting.

Drive more efficiently and less often: walk, bike, or take public transportation.
Carry reusable bags and examine packaging materials
Reduce meal portion sizes

IN YOUR ELECTION CAMPAIGN
Use public transportation and stage events in geographical order
Use environmentally-preferable signs and save them for your next campaign.
Promote your website rather than printing materials
Clean-up mailing lists to avoid duplicates
Give green take-homes such as seeds or local produce.
 
AT NACo CONFERENCES
Recycle paper, plastic, and cans
Drink water, diet soda, and 100% juices instead of higher-calorie options
Use a reusable water bottle
Conserve water and electricity in your hotel room
Reuse your conference registration tote bags
Drop your business card for electronic copies of materials
Walk to the conference location, or use shuttles rather than driving
