Aging Issues
As the United States approaches the next millennium, the numbers of elderly - persons age 65 and older - will explode. The aging of America is expected to transform every aspect of life in our country and in our communities.
The rising population of people in the 65+ age group will have far reaching implications for county programs, policies, services and budgets. All services funded by county governments, not just traditional aging services such as meals-on-wheels or senior centers, will be affected by the coming "age wave". The aging of the population will pose new challenges for the delivery of such county services as health care, transportation, housing, employment and training, education, recreation and public safety. The aging of the population will also pose new opportunities for counties which will realize the most healthy, educated and experienced population this nation has ever had.
To assist counties respond to the challenges and opportunities of an aging population, NACo has produced a series of publications and reports on aging issues.
