COUNTY ADMINISTRATOR - SURRY COUNTY, VA.
Salary: Salary negotiable DOQ.
Current administrator retiring after 17 years of service. The county is located on the James River in Southeastern Va. approximately 50 miles southeasterly from Richmond and 40 miles southwesterly from Norfolk. The county is rural with considerable wooded land and a history that dates to the settling of Jamestown (1607) which is directly across the James River from Surry. The county is concerned with growth issues and the expansion of its economic base. The County Administrator reports to a five member Board of Supervisors that is elected on an election district basis. The administrator is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the county under the policies of the Board. The duties of the administrator include the preparation and administration of the annual budget of approximately $26 mil (including schools and social services). The county employs approximately 90 employees and provides a wide array of services that run from parks and recreation and youth service programs to public utilities, planning, economic development and emergency services. The fire and rescue services are provided by volunteer organizations. The county has an excellent board and staff and a very participatory citizenry. The county is seeking a proven local government manager who can provide visionary leadership. Requires increasingly responsible governmental management experience in full service local governments and prefer educational background and experiences equivalent to a master’s degree in public administration or related field.

Bachelor’s degree in management, personnel or a related field and course work, seminars or workshops in human relations, interpersonal skills and risk management. Five or more years of progressively responsible experience in a personnel office, employment department or insurance firm with experience in employee benefits administration and insurance administration.
