Key Takeaways
On March 18, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) unveiled its first “Artificial Intelligence (AI) Roadmap.” The roadmap details DHS’s 2024 planned initiatives in AI, describing the potential of AI technologies across DHS and offering clearer visibility into its approach to AI. The roadmap underscores DHS’s commitment to responsible utilization, emphasizing the protection of privacy, civil rights and civil liberties while harnessing AI's potential to advance homeland security missions.
The roadmap outlines three innovative pilot programs:
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Pilot
- Utilizes Generative AI (GenAI) to streamline hazard mitigation planning for local governments by identifying risks and developing strategies
- Supports resilience-building efforts and disaster preparedness with AI-enabled planning processes, highlighting AI's role in improving disaster response and risk management
- Improves local governments’ ability to craft customizable mitigation plans using publicly available resources from which AI can generate draft elements
Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Pilot
- Strengthens investigative processes using Large Language Models (LLM) to enhance investigative report summaries
- Focuses on detecting fentanyl networks and combating child sexual exploitation with enhanced efficiency
- Develops an AI program that may be adaptable on the county level to enhancing public safety and law enforcement capabilities in sheriff’s offices
United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Pilot
- Improves immigration officer training through Generative AI (GenAI) technology by generating dynamic, personalized training materials that adapt to officers’ specific needs
- Enhances comprehension and retention of key information, improving decision-making processes and reducing retraining needs
- Advances technology, enabling local governments to potentially mirror the tailored training application at the county level to enhance their understanding and application of law enforcement policies, laws and procedures
The DHS AI Roadmap and pilot projects present county governments with opportunities to enhance disaster mitigation and law enforcement capabilities. As technology evolves, county leaders act as essential partners in exploring and adopting AI programs to improve government efficiency and enhance services.
